The Mansfield High School Drill Team was started by Dixie Dibley in 1972 and were originally called Dixie's Dolls. Dixie became a counselor at the high school and then, moved to other schools in the district until she retired. When Marybeth Henson took over in 1977 the team name was adjusted to The Dixie Dolls, since the school fight song, at the time, was Dixie. Marybeth remained a teacher in the district until her retirement in the early 2000's.
In 1991, the school fight song and team name was changed. The district opted to remove the connection to Dixie and the confederacy. The fight song was rewritten by the staff and the drill team became known at the Gold Dusters. The "leaping girl" emblem was that of the new director, Stephanie Algar-Burgoon. The entrance song for the team remained the same, Hey Look Me Over... The actual entrance was changed in 1994 when Robin Griffith Yates was the director, to include more dance, jump splits, turns, etc. The Silver Stars JV Drill Team was established in 1992, with Robin Yates as the director, and continued until 2009, when Yates left Mansfield HS.
There have been two former team members that have served as the director:
Courtney Morawski, Member, 1991-94; GD Director 2001-2003 and Robin Griffith Yates, Member 1978-81; GD Director 1994-99; SS Director 1992-93, 2006-2009
Lisa Hazelwood has been the longest running director, since 2006. This is her 11th year at Mansfield HS and her 20th year teaching and being a drill team director. At the end of this year, Mrs. Hazelwood is retiring and someone new will carry on the Gold Duster legacy as their director.
